Feat.Req: List species in genus with "data %"

Post by MatsP »

A list of species within a genus with an indicator of how much of the fields in the Cat-eLog are filled in.

This will help when trying to find more information about a species with little information - we can usually assume that fish in the same genus are generally similar in most aspects, so finding the ones of a particular genus that has most data would be beneficial.

Going further along this line, it might just as well help to point to other fishes from the same area

As an example, I got Ancistrus sp, collected in Uruguay (myself). How should I keep them? Well being ancistrus tells a lot about food requirement, breeding behaviour (although none yet), sexing (perhaps due to the fact they all seem to be males, at least 11 out of 12) and housing

Regaring the water parameters, I rather compare them with fishes found in the same area, such as Jenysia, Phalloceros (life bearers) Australoheros and Gymnogeophagus (cichlids)

So I keep them as I would with Ancistrus sp III, but the water temp is - at least in winter - far lower, 12 - 16 C, and some days even 10

Finding (cat-elog) fishes from the same area can be done via the occurrence table - so we already have that feature to some extent. It may be a bit course, but it's a good starting point. Obviously, we don't have links to find for example Gymnogeophagus that are from Rio Uruguay - I'm not sure there is an easy way to even get that [aside from possibly fishbase].

One thing me and Jools have been working on is "per genus data", so we can have information for a genus that fills in "blank" fields on a species that has no information for the species entry. This applies to the fields for:
Sexing, Feeding, Furniture, Compatibility and Tankmates.

As for the search feature, I don't think it makes much sense for the average forum member...
