Surprise ! 2 Brochis splendens juveniles (picts)

Hi everybody,

another surprise in one of my tanks... I found those two little guys in a 160 liters... this tank was a home for my 12 adult Brochis splendens during a few weeks, just the time to prepare their definitive house... and even if I had no idea about it (I did see nothing at all : eggs nor spawning behaviour), it seems they spawned...

could anyone help me aging those two ? I read the article on ScotCat, of course... but any help will be welcome...









I only know I made a serie of big rain water changes 2 months ago in every tank... the first result was the spawning of the Pseuda... and obviously, this one... any idea of how it happened ?

Brochis spp and Corydoras spp are quite responsive to simulated wet seasons as created by using large, cool RO water changes.
Setting the Brochis up in their own spawning tank would be the way to go to get a larger quantity of fry. They are sure cute little guys.

Juvenile splendens are such amazing looking fish, it would be so cool if they kept those colours to adulthood. I'd be tempted to set up a breeding tank for them on their own.

Lovely fish- they remind me of mine last year, when the adults spawned but I couldn't find my camera to photograph the amazing development of colour on the developing fry/juveniles, and the Dimetrodon-like sail of a dorsal fin. Judging by the fact that they've lost the saddle markings on the body and are starting to get the greenish body colour, plus visible scutes along the body, I'd say they're fairly well-developed- six weeks or so. The base colour of the body should gradually stabilise as a metallic green, and the orange and black fade in the dorsal fin, as they grow (the fins do stay slightly orange for quite a while).

The Scotcat development piuctures were fairly close to mine (not an exact match with the saddles and blotches), but miner were a few days behind on size and colour to the dequence shown there.
