L95 or L152 pleco ID

Post by arl »

Bought these guys 3 weeks ago under the name L95 orange cheek pleco. I posted pics in another forum and was told that they are L152. The 2 species are closely related but don't know the difference. The Cat-elog pics can't really confirm which ones are they. Size is about 4". Thanks

Your fish has clearly got spots on the body, which I think means P. genibarbis - that's the only scientifically recognized species of this fish - but there's a few synonyms.

been looking at this L152 pic Image and they seem to have some kind of spot or pattern which kinda throws me off. The L95 pics I've seen are adult L95 so not really sure if that's how they look like when small (similar to L152) Is there any prticular physical characteristic I should be looking at to confirn their species?

I don't see a single (adult or juvenile) picture of L152 that has spots. All pictures (here at Planetcatfish - fish found elsewhere I would suspect incorrect labelling if they are different) of P. genibarbis HAVE spots.

I know nothing about these two species myself, but I'm 95% certain that you have P. genibarbis

Thanks for confirming it for me. Kept me up last night when I read somebody's comment that my plecs are L152. Posted ID request in quite a few forums and nobody confirmed what species they are. AND I GOT A CONFIRMATION HERE IN THE FIRST FEW MINUTES !!!  Thanks!

So, you probably want to post "been confirmed" in those other forums. There is nothing worse than spending 15 minutes traipsing through photos and such, and posting an explanatory answer, only to find that "Oh, thanks, but I already knew that because such and such answered on someothersite.com".

I actually already did on 2 of the 5 other sites I posted (arowanaclub.ca & arofanatics). I'll do the same on the rest. Hope you don't mind me quoting your username. Thanks.

Hello.
Sorry to muddy the waters, but to me these are L152. I was in your exact situation some months back, when I received three Pseudorinelepis sp. L152, mine showed some degree of spotting which led me to wonder whether they might be P.genibarbis instead, but I was informed by several members here at the time I had L152. The conclusion I have come to is that L152 tends to show an almost completely matte black colouration when stressed (as is shown in many of the catelog picts), but appears more and more spotted as it settles. My fish now appear identical to yours. I was also informed at the time that even juvenile L95s (though rarely imported) show similar orange colouration to the adults at the 10cm mark, which my fish lacked (as do yours).
See this thread for reference http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/view ... hilit=l152

Now that sucks! Just when I'm releived that I got me an L95! :( What size are your L152 now? Would it be possible for you to post pics of your fishes if they're still in the 5"-6" range and I'll try to take a clearer pics of mine for comparison. You're right my plecs only have a very -very slight orange (if you can even call it orange) in the tip of tail and they're about 4" -4.5" already. When lights have just been turned ON they have a lighter color (darker grey) and spots more visible. Are your L152 very active like it doesn't matter if it's day and your infront of the tank, they'll still swim around like nobody's business?
