Unfortunately this is not my catfish. I missed that one - too slow thinker. What is this species? I have seen only one other picture in Japanese site of Panaques.
Have you seen this before? It is called 'fork tail acari espinho' in Japan. This magnificent species is from Iquitos, Peru. Sometimes totally white colour on the body when arrive, because this species tend to be found very deep region of the rivers (as deep as 30m!!(100 feet)). It is oldies but goodies. Known for several years now, but still rare in market. The spines on the caudal fin will be elongated as twice as longer than its body length. Some say it gets many short spines once a year. Maybe reach more than a foot (30cm). I saw about 40cm with really long tail spines from a friend of mine. Beautiful fish!! Again, many thanks to Ms. Kyen. (11/13/01)

I agree about the fish being exported from Iquitos, the second picture above was taken there - you see a white fish on white tiles. It appears to have the high body of Panaque and, as previosuly mentioned, other attributes of Acanthicus (but not the spines, at least not the same number). A very interesting fish that appears from time to time but you can usually get them when L90 are on the market.
