When does Platydoras hancockii croak?

Post by fischkringli »

I got one for 1 year, but he hasnt croaked in anyway. Some books say, that he croaks, when you take him out of the water. Is it true? :?:

My Platydoras amatulus do, but I dislike it - and would certainly not take them out of their tank just to demonstrate it

So noone of my friends ever witnessed it, I think

I have only heard them make noise out of the water.
I have only kept 4 species of Doradid cats over the years and they all made their croaking noises while being moved from one tank to another.

add a few more and you'll get plenty of croaking!

they can and do croak under water just fine; especially when trying to steal a nice hole from each other

you'll hear "buzzing" sounds. smaller doradids sound like a tiny membrane pump when it's leaning against the glass.

they croak in "bursts", so not like a fly against the windowpane, but short, controlled bursts.

unfortunately my hearing's too bad these days to hear those tiny fish

however, i have 2 sleepovers.......Megalodoras makes a REALLY impressive sound!
it's like a drumsolo

it's hiding behind a few rocks, and when I softly touched its' tail it sounded like RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, a very low and very loud sound, well over the volume produced by an old Eheim. imagine someone firing up a tiny Harley Davidson behind your tank
you can hear the bangs separately.....

Pterodoras granulosus has a similar sound, but a higher frquency.

Platydoras armatulus has a more buzzlike sound, but that one's quite audible too, especially when you have 2 8" adults fighting to get in the same piece of wood.
