what is the best filter for a 75 gal pleco tank?
Hi everyone! Can I ask for your suggestions? What do you think is the best filter for a 75 gal pleco tank?? Right now I only have 2 overhead filters for my tank but it seems not yet effective in clearing my tank. Thanks in advance !!

The best "ready made" filter you can buy is an external canister filter. On that size tank, with heavy stocking, you probably want two filters suitable for a 300liter/75g tank - overfiltering is never a problem unless the tank looks like a whirlpool.
Note of course that "best" is often difficult to define in one single criteria. Which car is best of a Ferrari or a Ford Transit van? Well, if you want to move building material, the van will win. If you want to drive around a race-track, then the Ferrari certainly wins. If you want good fuel economy, the van is probably a little better, but neither the van or the Ferrari are good here. Value for money, the Van will probably be better - even on a race-track...
So if you tell us in what way it should be "best", then we can probably tell you what filter is good/best in that way.
It is also not clear what you mean by "the filter is not clearing my tank" - are you finding muck in the corners - considering that you have Panaque sp. in your tank, you can expect them to make a lot of sawdust - there is no substitute for vacuuming that out of the tank.

I have two Rena Filstar canister filters on my 75 gal. One XP4 and one XP3.
I have one common pleco in there and 5 syno eupterus. Beautiful water but I still have to clean the filter every month. And the tubes.

On my 50 gal with some clowns in there I have a Rena Filstar XP3 canister and a Marineland 200 penguin HOB running. Tubes and filter housing done once a month. But the HOB media has to be rinsed and or replaced once a week due to gunkiness.

personaly i would go with something that would turn the tank over 2-3 times the volume but thats just my opinion.

I'd aim for at the very least 5x turnover - most of my tanks are between 8 and 12x turnover. Marine keepers tend to aim for 25x turnover.mweil wrote:personaly i would go with something that would turn the tank over 2-3 times the volume but thats just my opinion.
