Panaque maccus spawning video...

Post by MatsP »

I just posted my first (crappy) video on Youtube... My P. maccus has FINALLY decided to spawn again. Sorry, it's a bit boring to watch, but it's happening, and I've got the video to show for it. Wish me luck in getting the fry to hatch and survive!

that is so cool!! his cave is awesome!! Looks like you drilled it out of real wood and made it yourself?

I love how he does his whole "I''m so excited..twirling around the outside circle of the cave" thing at 1:36 mins! And you can see her in there as well!

and the rock/stone behind to the left looks like a whole face! That is cool!

I also like your substrate. The tank is awesome!

There are exactly zero rocks in there - only lots of bits of wood of several different types.

Yes, the cave is drilled out of a piece of mopani, I think it's a 32mm (1 1/8") hole, but I'm not entirely sure, as I have several different caves made with different drill-bits (I have drills from 6mm (1/4") to 40mm (1 1/4")).

Nice video. I never get tired of seeing catfish have a go, especially when they are some of my favorites. Best of luck with the fry.

Excellent video. It is very interesting to see the whole ritual.

Had you noticed any strange behavior before deciding to grab the camera?

Very good news Mats!! And great that you could film it :D
There may be eggs in there even if you can't see them, the male can really HIDE them. If he is very far in the cave and never comes out it is a good sign. :)

Keep us updated!

Yes, I will have another look later. He was sort of wagging his tail outside a while ago, but still fairly far in.

Anyways, I haven't seen them this interested in spawning for a long time - I actually raised the temperature in the set of tanks they are in for another fish's happines, and it seems to have done the trick (which is opposite of what you'd think - just goes to show you never quite know what you "should" do)

Great job on both the spawning and video. Any chance for a Shane's World exclusive write up? It would be the first ever truly multi-media article with video footage!

Sorry to disappoint, but it seems they were just having a trial run, or dad decided to have Panaque-caviar for breakfast, or some such. No sign of any eggs at all. I wonder what I can do to make them do it properly? [I have had eggs before, but never hatched any].

If I get some eggs, I will certainly make sure that I write something about it.

Hmm. Considering there was no eggs in the end, I guess Jools has the lead so far.

Mats, maybe we can combo it.. I notice my male in one of my wood caves fanning and I did see atleast 3 eggs the other morning when he fanned them out when watching the discus. The eggs were soon then eaten by the Discus. If I am able to get pics I will do everything i can to. How warm did you raise the temp? I went from 80 to 88 and that seems to be what caused it on my end as well. As of this morning it was day 2 with eggs (noticed them on Monday morning).

I was happy to see you start this as I was going to PM you and see how your attempts were going! I know my cave is 1 1/2" and I did a little work within it so it is wider the deeper you go! Its probably close to 2" where the male currently is (cave is overall 3.5-4" deep). I wonder if cave size and depthness would also contribute to if they feel "comfortable" with the conditions of spawning. ( If that statement was unclear, its like cich lids breeding in lake tanganyika.. they will only breed if they feel their cave or shell is adequate. I had a male and female similis in a tank for 4 years with very small shells and they never bred, switched out the shells for different sizes and then I had similis fry coming out my ears.)

Anywho, congrats :)
