L173?

Post by thezebraman »

Hallo everybody!

I went to a shop today and was offered what is supposed to be L173. When I saw them I was very insure. The fish were about 4-6 cm an they were
brownish-black and yellowish. The pictures I have seen before of this fish have all been white and black (almost as clear as the L46).

Is this color-difference just because this is young fish or is it maybe not L173? Is the L173 brownish and yellowish when young?

Then they are not true L173 - it is a black and white fish. There are lots of fish advertised as L173 that aren't.

L173 have a slightly different color than H. zebra. The ones sold in Norway are offspring from the ones in CatElog by Haakon H. who also happens to be the seller. I can assure you they are the real L173.

Normally the white of an L173 is a bit pinkish. When stressed the white becomes yellow. Apart from this the body shape and eye coloring is different from Hypancistrus zebra.

L098 However is a perfectly normal H. zebra with slightly irregular lines. Around 1/3 of the fish I breed are L098 although all parent fish are L046. Where are you from?

Stavanger :)

If the fish are from Haakon you can be assured they are the true L173.

Ok! Then I can`t know, but the colors you describe sounds like L173. They are quite different from L046 and L098. Definetely not the same species as their offspring always looks like L173.

The picture is of an L173. The white is normally a sort of dirty red, and becomes yellow when stressed. As I remember the black is also a bit dirty. I have spent quite a lot of time studying and handling small L173 at Jørn Kåsas place.
