Leiarius Confusion

Post by Redtailrob »

Hi all.

Can anyone explain to me the difference beteeen Leiarius Longbarbus & Leiarius Mammoratus?
My understanding is that it is the same fish just renamed?
I have purchased a Longbarbus a few years ago and it is identical to a Mammoratus i used to keep.

As an aside I also have what was sold as a P.Perruno but i believe this to be Leiarius although it is alot lighter in colour & the markings are different it has more than 10/12 bones to it's Dorsal fin.

Confused !!

The catelog entry fro explains that what used to be called L. longibarbis is indeed L. marmoratus, but there is currently a species considered L. longibarbis as well, but we do not have any pictures of such a fish - probably because it's rare in the trade.

L. marmoratus and L. pictus do turn up in the trade from time to time.

With 10-12 rays in the dorsal fin, it's obviously NOT a Perruno catfish, it is definitely a , as to which species, I can't say without a photo [and even WITH a photo, it's not easy].

Hi Mat.

You can see a picture of this fish in the pictures I posted, unfortunately you cannot get a good view of its Dorsal ray but nevertheless its a reasonable photo.

The one behind the silvery shovelnose thing!! (Sperator Acicularis).

Was sold to me as L.Longbarbas but is also identicle to my L. Mammoratus that i have in my Pond.
Although it is much lighter in colour and "may" have a slightly rounder snout, but without having them in the same tank and alongside each other i couldn't be 100% sure.
