Future feature?? Distribution per genus?

Post by MatsP »

I just thought it would be a good idea to list all occurrence records for all species in a particular genus - in order of the body-of-water tree, so you get all the species in the Amazon in one lump, the ones in the Orinoco in another, etc.

I'm sure I could create that at some point. I just wanted to mention it here to discuss and remind ourselves it is something that would be useful [I think, at least].

Of course, we can achieve something similar by searching the cat-elog in the advanced search, but let's say we have a fish exported from Peru, and we want to see what Ancistrus are likely to come from rivers in Peru [I'm assuming the person knows this, as "search by country" still isn't available in the Cat-eLog (and it's made complicated by the fact that a river may run through several countries)].

I would appreciate this type of feature as I don't know where all the places in the 'Distribution' are. Even a country letter after the place may help?
Racing, shoes and fish. Nothing else matters. Oh, and bacon.

this would be a great feature indeed.

I was thinking along these lines, maybe it is a good idea to include maps in the catelog? so when you click on a specific area or river, a map of the continent shows, with the given area highlighted or something?

Yes, there is already space in the database to put some sort of map reference in. However, given the combination of:
- There are 700+ bodies of water in the Cat-eLog (and it probably needs a few more added)
- There is no good place to get a map indication of most of those rivers.
