how to induce blue ram spawning.......

Post by DJ-don »

first of all, i know this isnt a catfish but this is the quickest replying forum i know!!

i have a blue ram pair, now in an aquastart 500 tank with 4 redtail/blueline rasbora's and 3 LG6 whiptails (soon to be moved out) and a lonely small male that i thought was a female (soon was male :( )
the ph is at 6.9 and the rest i cannot test because i ran out of testing stuff and the LFS i rely on doesnt open till this tuesday
im guessing the water has to be soft right? the female's pink tinge has grown quite big and she looks nearly as pretty as the male

i saw something happen when my male seemed to be Rubbing or cleaning the surface but the female then juts walked away

what do i need to do to induce spawning? or is this a patience game (hate this game :irritated: ) i am thinking the active rasboras might be throwing them off or the lonely male (i dont have any other tank to support him :( ) is irritating them but he is always hiding

thanks in advance

I'm sure google will give you LOTS of hits. Mine spawned after a water change (whether that is incidental or consequential is of course hard to prove).

thanks mats.
just did a quick search and the answers were all differrent.
one said water change
another said to change the ph in the water between 5.5-6.5 which i will not like to do because it could kill the fish if i dont do it safely
and another said if it is secluded after feeding they willl breed

i think i would like to see what others would say

The fact that there is a lot of inconsistency in the breeding pattern is probably an indication that it's not taking a whole lot to spawn these fish. Nearly all fish react positively to a water change (and making it slightly cooler than the tank itself is never a bad thing - obviously as long as the difference isn't TOO big).

Sof acidic water, water changes, warm tank- around 82deg, fed live/ frozen-live food the day before, broad-leaved plants to lay eggs on, choice of places to lay eggs and defend. Given those conditions, they usually 'get down to it' the next day.
