Sick Salmon tail

Post by King_Lockyer »

A few weeks ago my 2 salmon tail catfish started showing a white film over their skins. They guy at the aquarium suggested I try Melafix. Unfortunately I lost one catfish. The other came good for a few days then the white film reappeared. He then suggested that I try Multi-cure. After 3 days of adding the medication, I did the 25% water change and added more as my catfish still wasn't right. Then 3 days later the white stuff had gone so I did another 25% water change and didn't add anymore medication. This morning the white stuff was back on the top of his head. My question is, how long can I use the multi-cure for and should it have worked by now?

All my water levels are normal, however the temp is a bit high due to the really hot weather. I've been trying to gradually lower the temp with cold water.

Hope someone can help!

Which of the several species of fish that go under the common name of "Salmontail catfish" do you actually have. If it's an species, the problem may well be that it's pining for salt-water.

What exactly are the values of your water - it would be good to know the numbers, rather than an overall statement of "it's all good".

Mats; this is a feshwater Ariid catfish; it's Arius berneyi and it's a native catfish from Queensland, Australia
maybe it's Arius graeffei for wich the same is true; another real freshwater species, native to Queensland and maybe Northern Territory in Australia

not all Ariids are like Hexanematichthys/Sciades seemanni.

Sorry it's been a while since I first posted this. He seems to be much better now. The multi-cure must have finally kicked in. I tested the water again this morning and the PH is 7.6, Ammonia is 0.25 and the Nitrite is 0.

How long should I wait before I introduce another salmon? He's a bit lonely. Also, what other fish would go well with them?

I couldn't get a clear photo of him so here's a video.
