Hemibagrus filamentus ??

Post by Redtailrob »

Hi all.

I have seen this fish listed on Tropical Fish Finder and also was very lucky to own one that was given to me from a shop in Herfordshire that really knows its catfish.
However cannot find this fish anywhere on Planet Catfish so wondered if it was wrongly ID'd?
Unfortunately I do not have any pictures as i lost this fish a few yrs ago.

It was given to me because it was so aggresive. The shop couldn't house anything with it, without it killing or damaging its cohabitor and eventually after about 8 months it had grown to over a foot & they needed shot of it.

Was approx 16" in size and almost identical to Hemibagrus Nemurus but was slightly thicker in the body was light greay in colour with a distigushable lateral line and had a yellow hue to its Caudral & Dorsal fins.
Both the tail & dorsal Fins had long extensions of an inch or so (1st ray only on Dorsal fin). Very similar finnage in fact to Olyroides (Dragon Fin Cat) only a much bigger fish!

Any ideas people?

I've had a look, and there is indeed something called H. filamentus, but we don't have it in the Cat-eLog. I don't really know why it's not in the Cat-eLog.

If you can find one and get some photos, assuming HH or someone else with knowledge can confirm the ID, I'll happily add it to the Cat-eLog.

Do you have any idea where the fish came from? Hemibagrus filamentus is restricted to Indochina, so if the fish came from Thailand, it *might* be H. filamentus. I say might because I have not encountered this species much in Thailand (it appears to be more common in Laos and Cambodia and in areas where very little commercial collecting has been done).

Morning all.

As far as Im aware it came in as a surprise or at least was a surprise inclusion on an Import list from Thailand yes.
I'll double check with the retailer.

This is sometimes seen on the lists under its synonym of Mystus filamentus

(edit) That if it is H filamentus..

“That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome.
‘Is it common?’
“It’s not unusual.” :YMTONGUE:
