amazing website
Well.......we went out today to buy another Severum to keep our gold one company after the demise of a green one a few days ago. The Severums were bought as tank mates for our Oscar who seemed to be pining. He certainly perked up once he had some company.
However.....while we were at the shop, I saw a lovely yellow/green catfish and fell for him. Quite handy since the Oscar is so messy, it will be great to have some help keeping the tank clean.
Having checked compatability, tank size and so on we decided to take him (her). Acclimatising in the box with some of our tank water, our other 'cats' - two beautiful Abbysinians took suitable interest.
He / she seems happy in the tank, there's a vase to hide in, and plenty of silk foliage (the Oscar rips real stuff out), and all seems quiet on the western front tonight, and the Abby's are keeping an eye on things.
So in the interest of being well informed about our purchase, I jumped online and got down to looking for more information.
Your website is an absolute revelation, not just on Catfish, but as a well ordered, informative and overall five star site. We now know we have a Horabagrus Brachysoma (called Horace!), around 6" long, but if he grows much beyond about 9", he'll appear in your for sale area!
I don't think we'll ever turn into catfish addicts quite frankly, but if we ever need help with Horace.......we'll know where to come.
Now.....where's planetoscar?....or planetseverum for that matter!
Congrats and thanks again.

As the guy behind most of the site, it is great to hear positive feedback. Really, it's that kind of stuff (and the fact I find all fish stuff dead interesting) that keeps me going at it. In 2016, we'll have been running for 20 years! Nuts.
Planet Oscar etc would be a joy to do as dealing with one species as opposed to 3000+ would be rather nice. At least on the surface, having some experience of single species websites (http://www.zebrapleco.com) I do know passions can run quite high!
Congrats on the cat, you might be interested to know there was a time when they sold for hundreds of pounds before they became commercially farmed. I think some on the forum tell stories of them them for $500+ on sale in the US only a few years ago.
Meantime, I do plan to do an all fish web site with all the bells and whistles (and experience) of Planet behind me, but with a new child due in a couple weeks, that might take a little time!
Thanks again for the postive feedback.

Re: amazing website
Good luck with the impending birth! First or not? Got a question about our Horace, but I suspect tank talk is the correct forum for that?

By the way Jools, what's with the **** in C*****d's for example? Are these fish a dirty word to catfish owners? I posted my question on the Asian catfish section of tank talk - perhaps you can have a look if you have time, you may be able to help!

Re: amazing website
There used to be a FAQ entry, but it's currently under reconstruction.
So, I'll try to answer what the * question "by hand":
C ichlid is indeed considered a "dirty" word on Planet Catfish - this is because cichlid keepers tend to call all catfish "scavengers", which is a bit demeaning.
There is also a star in pl eco, which is because there is a superstition about posting on the internet about a pleco, which would cause bad luck. By not writing the word out in full, but replace the e with a *, you don't "use the proper name, so no bad luck".
You can turn both off by setting "word censoring" to "No" (or "off") in the User Control Panel "Display Options".

To expand even more...this is also all in fun, I will often say I have Cichlids to clean up after my cats...in reality many of the regulars do keep various species of Cichlids and other types of fish and enjoy many aspects of fish keeping besides Siluriforms (catfish). So, I'll try to answer what the * question "by hand":

Re: amazing website
Absolutely, and even Jools himself has a few Cichlids - has bred some of them, even. Of the regular members here, I only know for sure that Dave Rinaldo _DOESN'T_ keep cichlids at all.Birger wrote:To expand even more...this is also all in fun, I will often say I have Cichlids to clean up after my cats...in reality many of the regulars do keep various species of Cichlids and other types of fish and enjoy many aspects of fish keeping besides Siluriforms (catfish).

Re: amazing website
Actually, a number of leading catfish lights started off with cichlids or at least went through a serious cichlids phase before settling on cats.
