Newbie with no cat fish experience

I came across the PlanetCatfish site while trying to ID my two catfish, they were given to me by a friend (along with a bunch of guppies) as she no longer wanted them. I've looked after goldfish in the past but this is my first time caring for catfish.

After looking around the site, I'm pretty sure my fish are Ancistrus cirrhosus, I would post a photo but they are always hiding and I have an old digital camera that struggles to take photos through glass. Any tips on photo taking would be appreciated.

Welcome to Planet Catfish. There is a good chance that the fish you have is

Ancistrus cf_cirrhosus

- it is by far the most common type of Ancistrus in the trade.

If you have cared for fish in the past & have an understanding of the basics of husbandry you won't be too far from what is needed for a lot of catfish. There are some that require some very specific things but not too many & if you want to know about any in particular you just have to ask

Mats, I did originally think they were Ancistrus cf. cirrhosus but those pictures just didn't look right. Now I'm not sure and it's so hard to get a good look at them, as soon as they see me coming they hide! Maybe one day I'll manage to get a photo of them and work it out properly.

The other relatively common bristlenose in Australia is the "Peppermint bushynose", which either is

Ancistrus sp(L071)

or some closely related species.
