Etymology of species names for five Rineloricaria spp.

Post by lfinley58 »

Hi all.

Some potential additions for some species in the Cat-eLog are noted below.

Below are the etymological comments that were provided in the original descriptions of five species of Rineloricaria [Loricariidae]. I am offering them as published and they can certainly be modified as necessary.

1. Rineloricaria longicauda - "Specific name in reference to the great length of the caudal peduncle" [My translation from Portuguese].
The reference for this is: Iheringia, Serie Zoologia (Porto Alegre) No. 62: 61-80.

2. R. isaaci - "The specific name isaaci was given in honour of Isaac J. H. Isbrucker, for his studies on the family Loricariidae and especially on the subfamily Loricariinae."
The reference for this is: Jour. of Fish Bio. (2008) 73: 1635-1647.

3. R. malabarbai - "The specific name is given to honor to our colleague Luiz Roberto Malabarba, for his many important contributions to neotropical ichthyology."
The reference of this is: Copeia 2008, No. 2: 333-349.

4. R. baliola - "Rineloricaria baliola, from the latin
[sic] baliolus, meaning chestnut or reddish brown, after its color pattern."
The reference for this is the same as number 3 above.

5. R. maacki - "The specific name maacki is given in honor of Reinhard Maack, a geologist who made some of the most important contributions to the knowledge of the geology and physiography of the rio Iguacu basin and Parana State."
The reference source in the Cat-eLog is correct and the year is 2008 and the page numbers, if desired, are 355-366.
