Ick?

Post by Nube »

I just tried to add a common pleco into my tank 2 days ago. Under the tank light, he is covered in tiny white spots. At first I thought maybe it was just another type of pleco until I took it out for examination. Under normal light, the pleco looks fine. You have to look really close to see the spots. They are hard to see since he is barely 2" long. The spots are kinda "bumpy" in appearance which leads me to believe that it is possibly infected with ick.
Behavior is normal for a pleco: swim here, swim there, suck on everything, hang out on driftwood...
It's too late to bring the pleco to the store and ask if it is actually infected. Besides, I threw away the receipt.
So since I took it out pending a trip back to the store, I am now concerned that I have contaminated my tank. Some recent readings say 48 hours is a life cycle for ick. Should I treat for ick just to be safe? The current residents haven't shown any signs, but the pleco didn't either, besides the spots!

It's not really a good idea to medicate the tank unnecessarily. The fishes already in the tank might be able to successfully fight off the ich on their own (it usually breaks out due to stress).
