Black Sun Catfish???

Post by wolfspirit »

I have a catfish that I have bought as a Sun Catfish. Has all the right markings, except he has changed color to very dark gray--almost black, with a white belly. He was about 3" when I bought him about 3 months ago. Now he is about 5". I have never seen any pictures of Black Sun Catfish anywhere. I've been trying to photograph him, kinda hard, he's very nocturnal. If I get a good picture of him, I'll post it. Anyway, has anybody seen any catfish like the one I've described? Is it possible he's something other than a Sun? I would appreciate any ideas...

Sun cats sometimes lose their humeral spots with age and become a more uniform color overall. It's possible you may have Horabagrus nigricollaris instead, but if you say it has all the right markings of a sun cat (and H. nigricollaris has a distinctly different color pattern), I don't think that's very likely.
