mousing over the home page

Post by sidguppy »

yeah, it's a weird title, but I can't phrase it otherwise

the issue is this:
when i "mouse over" the top of the homepage; the 'action bar' so to speak; I get a few drop down menu's.

some work just fine, for example CotM gives a grey column with in purple the CotM's listed by year.

ditto the Catelog.

BUT
Shane's World gives just a wide grey empty square;
Forum gives a huge empty grey square

both Cool and Help! give an empty grey square about the same size as Shane's World

now read carefully:
this issue does not happen when mousing over the top action bar at the same action bar when the
Forum page is on

it happens when mousing the top bar and the page is set to Homepage;
Catelog (then Forum gives a huge grey empty square),
Shane's World (then the only working drop downs are CotM and catelog, rest is empty and grey),
CotM (ditto)
Cat-elog (ditto)
Books (same as Shane's World),
Cool (ditto) and
Help! (the last one gives a script warning as well!)

looks like only when the page is set to Forum that the dropdown menu's of the top action bar work properly.

That's really strange, because the home-page uses the same code to do the menu-bar at the top as the other pages. It's possible however that there is some sort of layout problem elsewhere on the page, which throws the browser into a weird state. Any chance you can tell us what browser you are using, just so we may be able to reproduce the problem (it's so much easier to know it's been fixed if you can reproduce it before starting to fix!)

I had a look at the HTML of the page, but I can't see anything wrong.

A guilty secret - I've seen this too. Well done SG for reporting it.

It's limited to MSIE. Gut feeling is that it's a non-escaped special character issue in the javascript. Mats, I'm a bit tied up until later on today, but you might want to run a diff on the view source output for both URLS and look see if there is something different in the header?

I get the same thing too, but it never worries me as I just click the "tab" title and the menu shows properly on the "next" page.
I get this on ie6 (no-one should care) on XP, and also ie8 on vista, and ie9 on windows7.
This is the homepage:
homepage.jpg
this is the forum page:
nextpage.jpg
The main thing I notice is that the "tabs" on the home page are larger than those on the forum page, so I am wondering if it is a proportion thing.

Also this occurs on wide screen 20" and 23" monitors and the square monitors 19".
It has been happening since before the upgrade of the servers.
It happens on all tabs to the right of Cat-eLog that have sub menus.

I'm going to guess that it has something to do with the layout / spanning of the "Frame" under the word PlanetCatfish.
Not sure if there is any more information I can provide, but I hope this helps.

(I wish I could type faster so folks don't keep posting while I am :d , even though I thought I'd be pretty safe in this time zone.)
Cheers

Ok, I will have a look when I get home tonight (about 7 hours from now, guessing...)

I'll run a blame on the home-page code as well, to see what's been changed...

It appears the quick find box is broken on any page where the blank drop downs appear...

the site itself works fine here too; it's just odd.
and i think it's not intended; probably some code indeed, although I know nothing about the backlaying codes of forums at all.

I usually open anything with the rightclick menu (open as tab; a habit learned from my mozilla browser days), and at home where I run Firefox, this doesn't exist.

the screenshots are spot on; that's exactly what I tried to decribe.

Apparently, I am an idiot. Some old, old code at Line 1, Column 128: Comments seen before doctype. Internet Explorer will go into the quirks mode.

Fixed?

It worries me tho, a classic example of why one should comment code. It feels like I did this because something else was broken.

Anyway, let's keep it fresh in mind and when we have confirmation it is a fix, then not forget it too quickly.....

PS It's checked in to the repository BTW.

I reckon that you can call this one fixed :d once SG confirms.
The "size" of the tabs was "correct" earlier today, and now the menu is showing correctly also.

Nice work
