Got a good number of these fish a few weeks ago. Keeping them in a tank with E.pussilus,A.maculipinnis,G.anamalaiensis and H.jerdoni.. Lovely fish these.

L-R : muricata,shawi and ferruginea???

cf.shawi. Are these just a colour variant or a different species???

. The hardiest species in this genus IMO.

Got some off coloured P.shawi this time. Is there more than one species parading around as P.shawi perhaps???

I've noticed in each shipment there are red, brown, and green ones. They all look the same morphologically though so I'm assuming it is a sexual difference or just variation.

Interestingly, the cf.shawi I posted above is found in the Sankosh while the true shawi is from Rydak 1 I hear. They don't have overlapping distributions.

I also got some really dark muricata's this time. Will post the images in a couple of days.

I'm not saying they are the true shawi, just that within shipments there are variations in colour.

Aren't the Sankosh and the Rydak very close?

I've just noticed that the last picture, the fish seems to have a long snout compared to the others. Am I seeing it right?

Yup. it does seem to have a longer snout.Unfortunately, the glass is in awful shape. I will take these specimens out for pics tomorrow.

The collection locations are thirty kilometers apart.

18 miles isn't a lot really especially when they both drain into the same basin (I think?), and the types were from Mahananda River weren't they?

Yup. Both rivers drain into the Brahmaputra basin and the types were from the Mahananda river.

Slightly OT : The Catelog quotes Mahanadi River as the type locality. This needs to be corrected as it is a more southerly River (flows through Chhattisgarh and Orissa.)

The snout looks normal in this pic.

The clog will say Mahanadi River because that is how the type locality was spelled in the original description but it is clearly wrong as the OD also said "below Darjeeling, West Bengal, India" which definitely makes it the Mahananda not the Mahanadi, that is further south. This has happened with other fish type localities as I pointed out in my article on Botias in 2007.

Oh alright. A small note or perhaps the correct name in brackets would help in the Catelog. Have you seen pics of P.kapuri or any other species that is not in the trade???

No, unfortunately the only ones I've seen in real life are shawi, muricata, ribeiroi and flavida.

Nope. I did get one specimen of P.ferula a few years ago. I might have a really ridiculous pic somewhere. In addition to your list, I am currently keeping P.ferruginea.

I had the two in the pics but they didn't last very long though I think others who got them faired much better with them. They were VERY cheap and from the Catfish Epicentre - Pier Aquatics

These two specimens have a steeper dorsal profile and lesser body depth (the second one is just too well fed

) when compared to the first specimen posted in the thread.

I thought this was P.flavida.
