Well, in my book, they are pretty uncool. But then I've seen a lot of Corys, just out of interest, what makes the cool to you? As to them being rare, out of the 1000 or so catfishes you can find for sale around the world, albino corys are in the most common top 10.

About the albinos though, why do you consider them uncool Jools? never heard any opinions on the little guys before

I like em, but thats just because my mom used to get them for my fish tank (the one on my website actually) and they were the most active in the tank

I can think of three without thinking hard, one species is very prolific (Aeneus) whilst the other two are rarely seen in my neck of the woods.

Generally I'm of the view that there are at least a hundred species of Corydoras in the hobby, many of them reasonably available and priced, why pick the most artificial gaudy looking one? Why not learn about and bred other species. That said, the albino cory is ALWAYS farm bred and that is a very good thing in its favour - especially for beginners.

I do mean uncool as an expression of personal taste. Dyed fish and suchlike are just plain bad, and I think virtually everyone agrees on that. To me, albino corys Vs (for example) bronze or peppered corys is like pink gravel versus sand or shipwrecks versus live plants.

I have seen albino:

C. aeneus
C. paleatus
C. stendachneri
C. barbatus
C. sterbai.

Rumours exist about albino C. gossei and C. panda but I have not seen pictures. Again, in all these species, doesn't the normal form look nicer?

I could not agree more Jools, there are plenty enough Corydoras species without the man made varieties.
Biggest problem is that if the hobbyist keeps buying them the breeders will keep breeding them.

I'm a relative newbie to the cory-keeping hobby.
So far I've kept albino aeneus, paleatus, brochis
splendens (not a cory, I know but close),
trilineatus, julii, guapores and leucomelas.

Albino aeneus is the family favorite so far.
They are unceasingly joyful, happy & horny fish
that are always doing something in the tank!
They may be common, but they're adorable.

A White-Tailed Deer, a roly-poly or pillbug and an albino rainbow shark, thoose are all of the albinos I have seen.

IMHO Albino fish seem to lack something (other then pigment). I also think that to line breed to create an albino strain is not overly great on behalf of man. To line breed such a variety for pure commercial reasons is rotten. Why not breed the regular varieties, and in the off chance that an albino is bred, then fine sell that.

The beauty of catfish in general is not necessarily their striking colours, but more so the character they display. Nothing beats watching them interact with each other and the other fish in my aquarium.

If I ever had to make the choice between original and albino, Original wins everytime.
