How to differenciate between H. devall and H. edentatus?
Hi,
I collected a Hypophthalmus species in Bolivia, it could be a new one of course but I´d like to be sure about this. So I wonder if anybody knows how to differenciate between these two species? H. fimbriatis is out, because of its enormous barbels, but the other two almost look the same to me. The only difference I noticed, is that P. edentatus seems to have a smaller adipose fin and a more forked caudal fin. But it could be the pictures as well.
Both dont fit concerning their distribution, but I noticed that a lot of pimelodiid species are distributed around huge parts of southamerica.
Any help or papers about the topic would be appreciated.
cheers, Daniel

According to this, the caudal fin in H. edentatus is not very forked.

Due to this paper, the fish in the cat e-log are not H. edentatus, because the head profile doesn´t match at all and the caudal fin is (at least in my opinion) forked. Maybe the H. edentatus are H. marginatus?! Unfortunately the pictures in the paper of the caudal fins in comparison is not very good.

I've not had time to read the paper, but the ID's from Mark Sabaj are usually pretty good. If there's a correction need through, post a thread in the cat-elog issues forum and I will get to it eventually.
