banjo stings

Post by xander »

Ever pick up a banjo cat? I had to take mine out of the tank for a substrate change(from gravle to sand) and I couldn't get him with the net so I just reached in and grabbed him. I wasn't weary about it since I have moved him like this before but not while he was so active. Once he was out of the water he curled his whole body around my fingers and seemed to sting me in a few places. I almost freaked but new I had to get him in the other tank so I had to wait a moment to peal him off me. Any one esle have this happen? Do they have multiple spines or was I just exagorating the trauma.

Do they have multiple spines
Not any more than the usual catfish complement (2 pectoral+1 dorsal).

I've been done by Banjo Cats before, they just sort of curl up and then vibrate, sticking the very sharp tip of the pectoral into any convenient soft flesh. It hurts!
