Blackwater Farlowella sp.

Post by Shane »

Collected with the Ancistrus and Hypoptopomatinae. These were also very dark brown overall at the time of collection. The pattern showed up after about a week in captivity.
I am still working out the exact identification.

Using Retzer & Page (1997), I keyed it out as best I could to F. platorhynchus.

HH,
That is what I keep keying out as well. I plan to double check with Retzer and/or Page. What is holding me up a bit is that all of the listed collecting locations are further upriver and are whitewaters. Maybe it is just a blackwater variant? Largest specimens collected were in the 8-9 inch SL (i.e. not including the tail) range.

The best I can figure from the map, we were on the Rio Callaru in Peru. We crossed over from the Colombian side at Isla Los Micos to the Peruvian side and followed a whitewater caño to a small blackwater river. I need to find a very detailed map of the area. I also need to start taking a GPS.
This Farlowella is a real chameleon. Sometimes they are an over all very dark brown, sometimes they are brown with the typical Farlowella black horizontal stripe and other times they are an over all light brown.
