pectinifrons and albomaculatus

Post by TalenT »

The LFS have both Agamyxis pectinifrons and A.albomaculatus on their list... now i´m wondering, what is the difference between the two? I´ve looked at the pics on albomaculatus in the Cat-eLog and i´ve got a A.pectinifrons in one of my tanks. There seems to be a slight differ in the markings. Yet I´ve seen that the markings on catfishes sold as A.pectinifrons may vary quite alot between individuals (size, location, ammount and color of the spots). The LFS also tells me that the two species (on their list) are sold at the exact same price.

AFAIK, they look the same. A. albomaculatus is a nothern species and A. pectinifrons is the one found in the amazon basin.

Ok a real answer. A.albomaculatis is not as thickly set behind the head,in comparason(best decription i could think of and in 3D is the easy way to tell them apart). with A. pectinifrons.

As different shipments of fish come in from different places I sort of new which species were which from location information, then it was just comparing the two to find the differences.

Very intersting, anyone know if there is any published information to back this up? Would you be able to take photographs to show this?

I don't have access to these species at present but its possible from above or looking up the back from tail to head in good light would show this. Don't know about any published information but not to my knowledge.
