I have 12 catfish from a pond need help

Post by RexyQuintana »

I pulled 12 young catfish (I believe they are mud cats) all of them are about as long as my finger. I think I may have changed their water too quickly. The tank is about 10 gallons and the thermometer says that the water is about 80° F they are swimming but they seem to stall and fall to the bottom and some of them will stand on their tails. They will lay down for short periods of time then start swimming again. One of them have what I believe to be ICK and I have put salt in the water. Is there anything else I can do and are my fish ok?

Masses of aeration & they really need a bigger tank - what filtration is there?
Lou: Every young man's fantasy is to have a three-way.
Jacob: Yeah not with another fu**!ng guy!
Lou: It's still a three-way!

They have aquatic plants right now I'm working on getting a filter in there.

What's your fish-keeping experience?

If you don't have a working, established filter and a running tank already, you will most likely lose the catfish. They can be saved but this will require lots of work in quickly setting up a larger tank with a filter and jump-starting the system and doing lots and lots of water changes daily. It'll require luck. And Ammo-lock too.

You have to have a plan how to house them for life, if this is your intention. Mud catfish aka channel catfish grow to 3'+ and 25+ lbs. They usually hit 1' in 6 months, 1.5'-2' in one year, ~2.5' in 2 years, ~3' in 5 years.

Your best bet would be putting them back in the pond, releasing them in the wild (if you pulled them out of a natural, outdoor pond), or finding someone who'd take them in.

I hope you have merely been busy.

If silence = offense and I'm the cause, I apologize. Never mind me, please.
