Peckoltia compta sexing question

Post by Orinocensis1 »

I know this topic is very debatable but everywhere I read, most Peckoltia especially Peckoltia compta males get "hairy" but the question I have is if you look at a female, are the TOTALLY hairless or do they have some but much lighter? Reason why is I have a group of 5, 3 are adults, 2 are young still and I have 1 adult possibly 2 that have a different head shape then my definite super hairy male.

The 2 that have the different head/body shape still have a little hair on the body but very fine and much less. I just wanted to know opinions if females have light amount of hair on their body our totally hairless thanks in advance

Hi Orinocensis1,

You're asking a very relativistic question. Can you please show us photos of your fish? Perhaps "slightly hairy" to you is "hairless" to someone else.

Cheers, Eric

Both male I think. Wait for a second opinion to be sure.

I think all three are male. But I'm not judging from first-hand experience because my own compta are young; I've never seen a live adult compta.

One is a little wider through the hips, which could mean female, but even it is spiny/hairy, so would have said male. Unfortunately, the one with the smallest odontodes also has the thinnest body... Not very feminine.

@ridout, any thoughts? Thanks.

Cheers, Eric

They all look male to me. Females have a noticeably smaller, daintier, head.

I agree all 3 male, sorry I missed one. I was paying attention to the pic with only two in it. Sorry.
