Fish foods

Post by pleco_breeder »

Too bad some people can't maintain their temper. I was looking forward to reading some of the replies to the homemade fish food recipes myself. Mine was listed in one of the bristlenose breeding segment a few days ago. Sorry, I don't know how to link a thread yet. Maybe someone could cue me in on this or link it to this new thread. Anyway, how about sharing some of what we are all using to feed our cats?

Larry,
If you need any tech help just let me know (that should have the other Mods laughing!). I have to order my fish foods from the States and stick to my favorites as far as commercial brands. These include Wardley Shrimp Pellets and Algae Wafers and Tertra Bits. I have experimented with others, but always come back to these. Other than these, I use locally collected blood worms and various veggies (pepino, yuca, squash, etc). I spoke with a guy who used to collect Panaque cochliodon and he said he always baited his traps with yuca, so I gave it a try.

PS If I have not said so before, it is good to see any other old time Cat-L face around.

The food I make for my loricariidea's and work very well even for most of other fishes too are as follow.
1 kg Cod (frozen package)
1 kg Shrimps (shell and head...everything)
1 kg Mixed vegetables (peas, beens, kernel corn and some more)
300 ml Oats (contains much fibre, soaked in water before blending)
300 ml Salmon food (protein, the smallest like they use in fishfarms for raising fry)
300 ml Soy flour (protein)
30 ml Spirulina powder
15 ml Multi vitamins

I mix the cod, shrimps and the vegetables in a blender to a very fine consistency, some water are used so the blender can work properly. Then I put everything in a big pot and blend everything together with the other ingridients, I freeze this stuff in small plastic bags formed like plates. Then its just to brake a piece of the plate and drop it into the tank, the food will sink after a minute or so and the oats and soy flour keeps it together so it will not mess up the water.
