Corydoras Something

Post by benny »

Hi guys,

May I know what fish is this? Just got it an it's about 3 cm long.

Image

The fish behind is a Corydoras Napoensis.

Thanks!

Cheers,

Looks like a somewhat pale C. steindachneri to me. And a male at that.
Then again, with all the weird stuff they're doing to Corydoras nowadays, it might well be a long-finned paleatus (if such a thing exists).

Hi,

i think this is Corydoras paleatus. Like Heok Hee said a male one.
The (visible) color pattern looks very paleatus like, C. steindachneri looks different. Here in Germany we thought a long time long-finned (males) forms of C. paleatus are C. steindachneri and they all turned out to be C. paleatus (Corydoras sp. C7 may be C. steindachneri). The long fined form may be an Asian-breed. There is also a discolored (no albino) form (its in Evers Corydoras-book, i don't know if there is an english translation of that book) which is also suspected to be an Asian breed. Unfortunatly all those forms where mixed often (unfortunatly because some of the forms we have here may be not Asian breeds but natural variants). Looks like you have such a "wild mixture" or a fish from Asian "manufacturers".

Greetings... Achim [too lazy to make the genus and species names italic right now ;)]

When in doubt, consult the original description....
Right, it ISN'T C. steindachneri. The head of C. steindachneri is more rounded.
So this is another one of those travesties being bred.

Yup, thats what i did... right after i wrote this post (i know i should have done it before...) and... now i have to correct myself
I had another picture in mind when i wrote "C. steindachneri looks different". I cant say that because the picture in the original description is not very good, even if the paper is not copied. The holotype was preserved ~ 50 years at the time of the description, so there isn't much of the colouration left. Unfortunatly there is no colour description of living fish given in the paper and afaik there isn't any dependable till today.
However the rest of my post stays and like H.H. wrote the body form differs (althoug there is a great variability in C. paleatus too) and the fish is (imo) a breeding form of C. paleatus.

Greetings... Achim

Looks like C. paleatus to me but at 3 cm its small for a for a mature male and the long finnage? could be yet another influenced by man species. Do you have any more pictures? a full profile would be good.

Nope. No photo of a side profile at the moment, but I'll try to get one.

Here is a better one of the front instead.
