I have kept this species since there arrival in the U K in the late 70's .I saw them first as
"New Bandit Catfish" my query is how do I retain the intense gold/orange spot on youngsters.

These are blackwater fish and show their colors at their best when the tank water is tinted with tannins. One other observation I have made is that their coloration will appear more dull over a dark substrate. In their natural habitat the sand substrate is very light in color. Replicate their natural habitat to the best of your ability and they will show their best colors.
