Help with Royal Pleco

Post by ConKhi »

I have received a royal pleco from a friend in a fish store. They did not want it anymore b/c it was sick. The thing that is wrong with it is that it has eye fungus. I am keeping it in a quarantine tank and it looks very fat and healthy and swimming strongly like a normal fish. Should I use antibiotics to get rid of this fungus like maracyn and maracyn 2? Or should I add some salt and increase the temperature and just make sure the water quality is good (can good water quality help get rid of this eye fungus?)
Just to describe what this fungus looks like... it seems like it's hanging on it's eyes but underneath it I can see it's orange eyes. Sorry for so many questions but I would like this guy to be healthy as this is one awesome looking fish.
Thanks,
Tim

I would try a course of anti-fungal treatment (not sure what you have in the states but here in the UK I would use protozin or similar) and maintain good water quality. I have been looking after one pleco which has recently got rid of a problem with its eyes, fungal rather than just cloudy eye, and after about 2 months with good water quality it has slowly improved and is now completely cleared. smile1

wow it took 2 months for it to get better? i don't want to use medication for that long and want to use it for a certain time only but definitely will maintain good water quality. i believe the fish to have pop eye as well as some sort of cloudy eye or fungus. i heard from another forum that this can be cured with malachite green and formalin. i want to know if this is true? thanks.

Malachite green and formalin are the two ingredients in Quick Cure, an effective treatment for ich and oodinium, that will have little to no effect on fungus. Usually its recommended to treat the fungal site with iodine, but that wouldn't be possible for his eyes. Have you noticed any improvement? Is he still eating? Are you doing daily water changes?

i been doing partial water changes daily... about 20% each day and i have been using quick cure and it seems to be doing the trick. the pleco is eatting and is pretty fat rite now. the temperature is also at 80 rite now and everything seems fine. do you guys have any other advice on how to remedy this? i also have antibiotics but not sure if i should use it. thanks for your help again.
