Robert Schelly, Roger Bills and John Lundberg have just returned from a collecting expedition to Lake Tanganyika. I took a look at a couple of their field photos, and was amazed to see Phyllonemus spp. over 20 cm long. There are apparently several undescribed species in the lake, with Paul Skelton and Lundberg working on the group now. I will see if I can post some photos, but has anyone seen Phyllonemus of that size in the trade?

the biggest I've ever seen were 10 cm or so, but very stubby, like old Lophiobagrus cyclurus can get.

new species? so there's more than two Phyllonemus?
a 20 cm Phyllonemus would be a stunning fish for any showtank. I'm still convinced that P typus is THE most gracile and beautiful cat from Tanganyika, and the bright red to deep dark reddishbrowncoloration stays on even big 'uns.
Unlike old Lophio's that can get truly ugly, old Phyllonemus still retain that nice color when housed properly.
