Two Ompoks or only one?

Post by Jorge »

They came to my LFS. I don't know if they are two species mixed (I think could be O. eugeniatus top and maybe Ompok pabda down)

or are both the same? in this case O. pabda?

Any ideas? :?:

You mean the difference between Kryptopterus and Ompok? Or among different species of Kryptopterus?

The traditional method has been to look at the extent of the gape. If it extends to at least the front edge of the eye, it's an Ompok. If it does not, it's a Kryptopterus. The number of dorsal-fin rays has also been used: 4 - Ompok; less than 4 - Kryptopterus.

These methods do not provide clear-cut distinctions between the two, simply because what is now known as Kryptopterus and Ompok consist of more than two genera.

Thanks silurus :D

It seems to be difficult ... what about differences among Kryptopterus?

I suppose all of this are K. bicirrhis... or any is not?
