Sorry for your loss - you must be gutted.

Whenever I go away I always leave frozen food (bloodworm, brineshrimp etc) and tell my mother to only feed 1 square every 2 days. Thankfully I have never had any problems so far.

I was once doing water changes on a tank when a neighbor rang the doorbell to say that a dog had just chased my horses through a fence. I quickly shut the water off (one of those all in one type faucets where to make it warmer you lean the handle to the left and colder it's to the right). 2 hours later when I got the horses put back and the fence put back up, I went upstairs to pick up where I left off. You can't imagine the terrifying feeling of carpeting that soaked through with warm water when you step onto the landing. I'd been slowly running straight hot water into a 45 gallon tank for the entire time. The tank temp was up above 95, and the water had run down through the floor, through the ceiling below, and into the next floor. What a mess!

The good part of the story is that all the fish lived, and none of the horses were hurt. I still double check to make sure I have the water taps turned off now though!

when i go away my fish always go on half or quarter rations. the fast will probably do the fish good, and there's much less risk of an accident with an overzealous fish-sitter. cubes of frozen food are very good for this.

talking about disasters, my friend had a 4 foot tank (full of fish) shatter!
