Hypancistrus sp. L199 Spawn

Post by kkorotev »

Look in the gravel at the cave opening.

There are 7 wigglers there and more inside. This picture is taken on the 5th day from spawn and I would bet these fry are already 24 hours or more from hatch. Janne E. predicted these exact events for me based on his experience with the same species. I think it is safe to suggest to anyone keeping this fish that the eggs hatch earlier than you might expect and Dad may kick them out as early as day 2.

BY the Way, these fry will look like the little picture to the left of this post (the avatar) when they get to an inch or so. The male in the tube is over 4". The female is just under that. They are wild and I would guess them to be at least 3 years old.

Vedran,
Figure out a way to do it and you know I will!
Brian,
Sure. I won't be keeping them all.
David,
Thanks! I thought so too!
Graeme,
I have come to believe that the water chemistry is an incidental matter, if extremes are avoided. But to be as specific as I can: Temp 82-84, Milwaukee tap water leaves the pipes at about 160ppm of dissolved solids. pH is neutral.

If anyone were to ask my advice about getting a stubborn pair of Hypancistrus to spawn, I'm becoming fond of my new answer: "Stop pampering them". These fish do nothing fast, INCLUDING adapting to: water/temp/feed/tankmate changes. Do a big water change and then let the tank sit for a month or more. Keep feeding and don't overfeed. See what happens. It is a weird adjustment to make, but it seems to be working for me. BUT ONLY WITH ADULTS.

It has been a couple hours since my original picture and post. There are now 11 wigglers in the gravel.

Thanks for all your support everyone!
Kevin

Hi Verdan!

I wasn't thinking about hybrid, but since the young L199 were kicked out of the cave,I was wondering if the "first" ones ended up in front a cave with a L201 as the L201 fry could have been taken for L199 on the pic Kevin posted...

Cheers

Yann,
Your question is valid, certainly.
No. They are in separate tanks.

Here's the lastest pic. 21 total fry. The male does not take his job as seriously as a H.zebra. He scooted out as soon as I touched the cave.
