Etymology From the Greek notos, meaning back and oura, meaning tail. In reference to the confluent adipose and caudal fins. This specific epithet literally means armed or protected and refers to the specimen's large spines and serrae.

Distribution North America: Gulf Slope drainages in the USA: disjunct populations in Conasauga River, Tennessee; Etowah River, Georgia; Cahaba River, central Alabama; Tombigbee River in western Alabama and eastern Mississippi; and Pearl River in southern Mississippi and eastern Louisiana.

Feeding In the wild feeds on mayfly nymphs and the larvae of caddisfly, midges and blackfly. In the aquarium will readily feed on live and frozen foods. Will also adapt to flake and prepared foods. User data.
