Etymology | The name Pangasius comes from a local (Bengali) name of the fish (pungas). The species is named after the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and used its abbreviated form. ICAR is the parent organization of the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, which conducted the research leading to the description of this new species. |
