Type Locality Río Guarapiche near Maturin, Monagas, Venezuela.
Synonym(s) Heptapterus anisurus
Etymology Phenacorhamdia from phenax, imposter or cheat and Rhamdia, a related genus, i.e., a false Rhamdia, presumably referring to similarity to that genus.
