Common Name
Type Locality Impalila Island, at confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers, 17°45'S, 28°10'E.

Etymology Zaireichthys: From the Zaire river and the Greek ichthys, meaning fish; in reference to the type of the genus and its collection locality. The specific name refers to the conspicuous bold markings of the species.

Size 35mm or 1.4" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification The majority of species are small and compact, have a defense mechanism of three ossified spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins,being able to lock them into place which makes the genus different from all other Amphiliidae.

Somewhat more robust than other members of the genus. Lateral line short. Skin of dorsal surface of head and body with minute papillae. Background color is beige with faint orange tint in adipose and upper caudal fin. The body has many dark brown/black patches which are often confluent, forming a reticulated pattern, or even broad vertical stripes. Head brownish with yellow cheeks.
Down Habitat Information
Distribution Upper Zambezi and Chobe rivers, possibly also Okavango system, southern Africa.

Furniture In nature the majority of species are found over or in sand in flowing rivers. There is one known lake dwelling species from Lake Malawi which is also found over sand and living in snail shells.
