The yellow 'tips' of his tail are part of his colouration and he'll have them all his life - that's assuming he's the same as my little boris! (ancistrus temmincki). i'll try to get a pic of boris so you can see if they are the same.

I have a bristlenose myself, and by the sonds of it your's is only a young one, this would explain why there aren't many bristles yet.

If you want some more info on the i can recomend "Bristlenoses: Catfish with Character" by Kathy Jinkings, as a good read.
