Lophiobagrus sp. cyclurus
The above catfish are offered for sale as wild caught examples by a Dutch store. What's the meaning of "sp." exactly? Does it mean they are not sure, that they might be brevispinis or another lophiobagrus?

otos in a Tanganyikan tank?
Due to high levels of diatoms in a fairly new tank (2 months) I am considering the short- to medium-term addition of otocinclus affinis....having researched the prefered water values of this fish it doesn't seem to be a great idea, especially when they seem to have a reputation for dying on you ...

Now I'm disappointed again, with the syno nigromaculatus label I at least had a proper Tang species but I've just seen perhaps the closest match in the Cat eLog, Synodontis sp.(1), picture one.
The fish in this series of pics seem to be quite deformed and ill proportioned, but picture one from the ...

The main problem here is the quality of my pics but also perhaps that mine are still 3-4" juveniles and not fully grown 8" adults.
I have no problem with the above illustration from Boulenger with the sole exception of the caudal fin, mine clearly has a forked outline along with the lacey, spotted ...

Finally I get some (crap) photos back and scan them, then crop and improve brightness using Photoshop and then wham - this board doesn't allow uploads. Bah!

will barbels regrow?
I have a dwarf petricola that's led a tough life in a tank with with s.decorus and s.multipunctatus, Malawis and Tang. cichlids. His barbels are a mess but will they regrow now that he's in a less aggressive environment, with a sandy substrate too?

duh! sorry mate, I thought those were treatment durations! that was a bit frightening!
I turned the tank up from it's normal 26.5 to an indicated 30, it had reached 28.4 by this morning.
Can I quickly ask if the water change is to help remove medication or the cysts (by vacuuming the substrate) or ...
