PC and Router Configuration Problems

Post by racoll »

I'm getting pretty desperate now. Having big problems configuring a wireless router and modem

Unfortunately my usual computer guru is in another hemisphere, so I am wondering if any of you chaps know your LAN from your WAN?

The hardware:

Thompson Speedtouch ST536v6 ADSL modem
D-Link DIR-300 Wireless G Router
2 PC laptops running XP (known heron as PC1 and PC2)
PC1 with a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN adapter
PC2 with Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter WPC54G V3

The problem:

PC1 is not able to connect to the internet via wireless
PC2 is able to connect to the internet via wireless
PC1 is able to connect to the router via wireless
PC1 is able to connect to the internet via ethernet cable through the router
PC1 is able to connect to other wireless networks
The modem was installed via PC2
The router was installed via PC1

The settings:

Firewall disabled on PC1
There are no wireless security settings (an open unsecured network)
The screen shots below show all the various settings of the two PCs and the router.

I think the problem is something to do with the MAC and IP addresses of the various equipment and some sort of network conflict arising from the installation of the equipment on different PCs.
I could be completely wrong though, as this is all on the periphery of my understanding!

Any help will be greatly appreciated. :D

Here is some more info from the router, if it is any help:

PC1 is "ZAPHID8" and PC2 is "your-vimqhg1d72".

Your "default gateway" is different between the two machines. With 255.255.255.0 mask, you can't actually get to 192.168.1.1 as the same network.

So the default gateway on PC1 should be 168.192.0.1, i.e. the same as the IP of the router and the default gateway of PC2?

Yes, I think so.

Particularly considering that the one that works has that setting, and the one that doesn't, have the "wrong" setting.

Ah, now you are asking difficult questions. It is in one of several places - the two most likely are:
* If you have hard-coded your settings on the network card, it's under Start->Settings->Network And Dial-up Connections, then right-click on your network device, Properties->TCP-IP protocol->Properties [if it says "Obtain IP address automatically" then it is the next option], and change the settings there.
* If the setting is gathered by DHCP (which I think it is), then it's the DHCP server that needs changing, which is somewhere in the D-Link setup [Sorry, I don't know precisely where you'd chante that, as I don't even have a D-Link device].

It almost looks like the gateway is being set to match your external WAN address (in the D-Link picture, 192.168.1.254 is the gateway) - but that's your gateway for the WAN side of your network.

I hope this helps. PM me if you want to have "phone-support".

Mats, there is not an emoticon I can use to express my gratitude. Changing the default gateway worked :!:

I have spent almost all of the weekend and every night this week trying to fix this.

I owe you one.

Next time I'm in New Zealand, I'll make you buy a beer or two, then... ;-) [Oh, don't worry, I've got absolutely no plan on getting to New Zealand in the foreseeable future - not unless someone gives me a mega-price-winning lottery ticket for christmas or such].
