I hope that the dam does not get built, but with the poulation in the area they are going to have to do something to make electricity. If the dam does get built, the fish are in real trouble. Why do I say this you may ask? Well if the dam is as deep as one would picture the 3rd largest dam in the world being, then the water coming out of the dam would be far too cool for many, if not most or all, of the fish to be able to spawn. This is much the same thing that has happened here in the american southwest with the hump-backed chub. Let's all just hope that the dam at Belo Monte does not get built! Let's have a separate thread to discuss the effects of damming neotropical rivers that are sources of Hypancistrus spp.
This is a complicated subject and there are various reasons and methods in design and operation that can mitigate the effects.
Building of the dams is a given. Only the time tables are subject to change.

A breeder registry is possibly useful but due to the international nature of this forum I am not sure how such a registry would work. I know I try to network informally with breeders I know and am willing to trade the species I raise for those I do not have.
I can only raise a few more species than the 3 species I am already breeding as I do not have a large fish room.

I am trying hard to begin breeding wild Discus again after a many decades break and shifted to some domestic hybrids Discus. I plan to continue breeding one domestic form of Discus, have set up some wild Nhamunda Blue Discus pairs and plan to begin to try to get wild Red Spotted Green Discus breeding beginning with the acquisition of them later this year.(Help me by buying some of my plecos )

This would only take a day or a bit less to build but it's of very limited utility as it is unstructured and there is no validation beyond moderation. For me to build something better would take several days, in elapsed time that would be months. I've done a fair part of it with "my aquaria" and "my cats" just need the spawning information and then a register of species for sale/swap and it's there.

That is no mean task - if you asked a software company to build it, it would cost tens of thousands.

Not a lot of use to me, I tend to swap fish with people from other countries. But taking it as a idea, then well, more broadly, the geographic model is a bad one, better to use species as the lowest entity and then work up from there. They're better defined. Some folks locations are not defined and many are quite unspecific as the data is not validated.

That is no mean task - if you asked a software company to build it, it would cost tens of thousands.

And if you didn't spend several days writing down EXACTLY what you wanted, then you'd probably end up with something completely different from what you actually wanted.

Agreed, after I posted I thought it would be easier to do by species rather than country. I wonder, would there be some way to list the fish you have spawned in your profile? Then somehow compile that data? I must admit that I am not the most computer-literate person out there, I honestly don't know if this feasible or not...I am sure there is a way, but time is money?!

Yes, that's the idea. But in order to list what species you have spawned, then first you must list what you have and what you are keeping them in for the data to be much use. So, that's where we are just now with my cats and my aquaria. Spawning logs are next.
