Growth Rates for Synos?

Post by BoBzz »

What sorts of growth rates do the various riverine Synos have?
Do they normally grow pretty quickly given proper food, space, water params, Etc?
What are the Faster/Slower growers?
What about Syno. Ocellifer?
Thanks! :D

The growth of most Synos can be depicted by an "S" curve, with a short tail on the bottom and a long one on top. Growth is quite slow (in absolute terms) for the first 6-12 months (fry-juvenile), then accelerates given proper conditions (juvenile-sub-adult), and stabilizes thereafter (adult).

Riverine Synos grow faster than lacustrine (lake) ones. I'm not sure why.

My Syno. Ocellifer doesnt seem to be growing much if at all in the 1 1/2- 2 months I have had him.
I bought him at around 4-5" and I doubt he is even a 1/2" bigger.
Should I be seeing more growth than this?
He gets plenty of food Earthworms, Pellets *3-4 varieties*, Plankton, Smelt, Squid, Mealworms( Almost never as the Bichirs usually get them first! ).
Any ideas?

Thanks for your reply! :D

Hi,

I think that this is because the riverine synos have to swim against the current of the river while Lakustrine synos dont have to.So the riverine synos have greater metabolism and they have to eat more than the riverine and as the result they grow faster. Its just like plecos,if you put a pleco in a tank with no current and one in a tank with current, the second will grow faster than the first and will eat more algae because he will have greater metabolism because of its greater activity.

One to two months is a short time, and 1/2" is plenty of growth over tht period. Remember that clean water is as -- maybe more -- important to growth than lots of food.

I would like to thank Kostas (*) for that input but cannot access a "thank" button anywhere?
Also I have four Pyjamas synodontis and they don't seem to be growing much at all - they still fit in the nooks and crannies of my bog wood although slightly giving themselves away

at OP: With most of my juvi-sub-adult synos (~30 different kinds), I could notice some growth only over a year or so. They are not fast. On average, 0.5"-1.5" a year, depending on the final adult size. Ocellifer: maybe averaged 1" a year. YMMV.

at Sam: are some of the slowest growers ever - their growth can be easily noticed only over a decade or so.
