Syn. Angelicus Eating Neons?

Post by Caribou »

 I've had two syn. angelicus for a little over a month now. Their diet consists of shrimp pellets, algae waffers, assorted veggies and frozen brine shrimp and blood worms. I've been feeding after lights out, but I suspect lately they've taken a fancy to eating my neon tetras at night. I've lost one tetra a night for the last three nights. All other species in the tank are bigger than the neons. Any insight? The angelicus are about 3" long. Thanks!

Caribou,

Its perfectly possible the angelicus are eating the neons, although at 3 inches it's iffy; were they larger I would say certainly, although angelicus isn't a piscavour by nature, they would eat them while the neons were sleeping as a matter of course.

However, you failed to mention what else in the tank is 'bigger than the neons'. Are there any other catfish species? Doradids (notably Platydoras costatus) and commonly available pictus cats adore a neon dinner. A list of your fish would be helpful in pointing out the culprit.

By the way, you can feed angelicus in daylight; they will adapt quite readily.

:D Other catfish species are corys and gold nugget plecos. I do have one large angel fish that is capable of eating the neons, but the neons seem to disapear over night, not during the day. The angel has lived with the neons for over a year with no problems.

Angels eat neons. :P Just because they have been together for a year, that doesn't mean the angel won't eat any fish small enough. It probably took that long for the angel to get big enough.

toddnbecka is dead right; angels will eat any fish of sutible size, and they are terrifically fond of neon tetras, as they are the perfect size.
