She's (Meg) about 16" now Dave. My male is about 18". Cave is a 12"x 12" x 30" clay chimney pipe. I still owe you for her Dave. I think I may just fill a box with Xingu river Hypancistrus fry and give you a tracking number. I owe Barbie a few fish too...

I feed spectrum pellets and blackworms. They have small spawns (10-20 eggs) and the fry are heavily spotted when they hatch.

Re: What kind of Hypancistrus?
As this fish is freshly caught from the wild, it's still bright white and dark black. Time will tell what it is. If it's what I believe it to be, it will fade to dark grey over light grey/almost white. It will keep a white belly, but the tail shape (when it heals) will be different from L-173. Shari...

More whining and further derailing of this thread. This thread is about the identity of a fish. Not what you care to whine about. I'm sure you'll further whine after you read this and completely destroy a thread of intelligent information sharing. Which will prove you are truly a moron.

Re: What kind of Hypancistrus?
This is an endless game of pinning the number on the Hypancistrus but just comparing the 1st two photos in the initial post to the photos in the Cat=elog entries, they look much more like L173 than Hypancistrus sp Lower Xingu to me. The 3rd photo is a much more mature fish, maybe it is and maybe it...

Shape of caudal fin is consistent with Hypancistrus sp. "Lower Rio Xingu" as is yellow tint to pectoral fin tips. Size of first ray on pectoral fins is also much larger on H. sp. "Lower Rio Xingu". What do you think of this fish? Do you think it's the same as yours? Hard to see c...

Re: L333 info
Adult L-333 have no trouble living with tank mates, but if they spawn, the fry survival rate will be lower if there are cory cats in the tank. The cory cats won't eat the Hypancistrus fry, but they will out compete them for food.

They are simular looking to L-173 as fry. The parents only look as good as the fry when I am changing water or grabbing caves. I'll get some pics of the parents in the next couple days.drpleco wrote:the bigger fry in there with the horizontal stripes looks close to an L173 - weird!

Fry are 2-3cm and about 3 months old or younger. I think they are the brightest yellow fry of all my Hypancistrus. Collected in lower Rio Xingu, came in a box of L-174's, shipped out of Belem in Feb 2008. These were striped and 1" (SL) when I got them and looked like L-173 before they turned to spotted fish. You can still see some striping on a couple of them and you can see how the stripes are turning/brea...

Re: Questions on Keeping Shrimp with plecos
I've kept cherry red shrimp with many different Hypancistrus sps. and mine always eat them. I think bare bottom tanks makes them easy prey. Since cherry red shrimp are so prolific, I consider them a food culture now (I also consider Geophagus altifrons fry a food culture).
